You bet there is, and it offers a variety of health benefits. Curious as to the benefits of CBD hemp oil for dogs? This blog post has you covered!
What Is CBD Oil?
First and foremost, in case you don’t know, we’re going to explain what CBD oil is. Put simply, CBD is a compound existing in cannabis and hemp. Also known as cannabidiol, it’s the non-psychoactive cousin of THC.
So, while THC produces a zany high, CBD does not. That said, CBD produces a number of other effects and can be highly beneficial to the physical and mental health of both human beings and canines.
CBD is available in a number of forms, from oils to edibles to creams and more. However, its base form is that of oil.
What Are the Benefits of CBD Oil for Dogs?
CBD oil has many benefits as it pertains to dogs. We’ll discuss the most prominent of these benefits below.
Relieves Physical Pain
Does your dog have bad joints? Maybe he or she is dealing with inflammation? If so, CBD oil could be a giant help.
CBD works with the endocannabinoid system to reduce all types of physical pain. As such, by giving it to your dog regularly, you can do a lot to help keep him or her comfortable.
Quells Anxiety
Maybe your dog gets agitated when you leave? Perhaps he or she has an irrational fear of other people? In any case, if your dog suffers from anxiety, you should consider treating it with CBD oil.
CBD oil stimulates the endocannabinoid system, effectively slowing down the mind and quelling anxiety. By giving your dog CBD oil on an everyday basis, you can greatly reduce his or her apprehension.
Prevents Nausea
Is your dog prone to fits of nausea and vomiting? Maybe he or she throws up while in the car? If so, it might be a good idea to add some CBD oil to his or her diet.
CBD has shown efficacy in treating nausea in both dogs and human beings. It does this by reducing anxiety and by promoting stability.
Reduces Risk of Seizure
Maybe your dog suffers from seizures? Perhaps you’ve had no luck with traditional medications? CBD oil could be just the thing you need.
CBD oil has shown to be effective for treating seizures in both humans and canines. Give it to your dog daily and see if any difference is made. This could be an absolute game-changer.
CBD Oil Dosage for Dogs
Now, you might be wondering: how much CBD oil are you supposed to give to a dog? What’s the appropriate dosage? As you might expect, that depends on the dog’s weight.
Whereas a 10-pound dog should take between 1 and 3 mg of CBD at a time (once or twice daily), a 50-pound dog should take between 5 and 15 mg of CBD at a time. A 100-pound dog, on the other hand, should take between 10 and 30 mg at a time, while a 150-pound dog should take between 15 and 45 mg at a time.
Different dogs will have different tolerances, and the more a dog uses, the more it will need in the future. You can experiment a bit within these ranges but you are advised to start at their low-ends and move up as needed. If you give too much too early, your dog could experience adverse effects.
Are There Any Side Effects Associated With CBD?
CBD can be exceedingly beneficial for dogs. However, it’s not without its side effects. These side effects include the following.
Dryness of the Mouth
One effect that your dog might experience is a dryness of the mouth. CBD has been known to temporarily reduce the production of saliva. The less saliva that’s produced, the drier the dog’s mouth will be.
Don’t worry, though. This effect fades away as the CBD evacuates the dog’s system. So, if your dog does experience some discomfort, it won’t be for long, and the positive effects should largely overshadow any discomfort that mouth dryness might bring.
Lethargy
As we noted, CBD can be used to treat anxiety in dogs. But, while it treats anxiety, it also sometimes causes lethargy. In other words, it can cause dogs to feel exhausted and drowsy.
Note, though, that this effect will wear off once the CBD has exited the dog’s system. It’s not long-term and should not detract you from giving CBD to your pup.
Loss of Appetite
CBD can have all types of effects on a dog’s appetite. In some cases, it will actually increase it. In most cases, however, it will cause a dog to lose its appetite.
Note, though, that if your dog isn’t eating while under the effects of CBD, you have no reason to worry. It will leave the bloodstream soon, after which your dog will be ready and willing to eat.
Reduced Blood Pressure
In some cases, CBD will cause a dog’s blood pressure to reduce. This can result in lightheadedness and discomfort. It might even cause your dog to become dizzy and lose coordination.
Note, however, that as with the other side effects, this one is completely temporary and will go away as the CBD leaves the dog’s system.
